SBMs Unite: Driving Excellence Across Embark Schools at Morley Hayes

Yesterday, Embark Federation brought together School Business Managers (SBMs) from across all of our schools for our latest network meeting, held at the beautiful Morley Hayes. These termly gatherings are a key part of our collaborative approach, giving everyone responsible for the operational and strategic business management of our schools the opportunity to connect, share expertise, and stay up to date with important developments across the trust.

The morning began with refreshments and a warm welcome from Trust Leader Matthew Crawford, who reminded everyone of Embark’s vision: to create schools that stand out at the heart of their communities and to help everyone Love Learning and Love Life. Matthew also reflected on the successes of the past year – including notable Ofsted outcomes, the growth of our governance structures, and the wide range of opportunities created for young people and their families through events such as the Embark Awards, World Book Week, and the Dance Festival.

“Our SBM network is such a vital part of Embark’s success,” said Matthew.
“It was fantastic to spend the day with colleagues who play such a crucial role in making sure our schools run smoothly and can focus on delivering the very best outcomes for our young people. The collaboration, ideas and passion in the room yesterday were truly inspiring.”

A Packed Agenda

The day was filled with valuable updates and discussions, including:

  • Trust News & Vision – Celebrating new schools joining Embark, strengthening partnerships, and continuing to embed our values across all areas of work.

  • People & Culture – Updates on recruitment, safeguarding requirements, and professional development opportunities to support SBMs in their role.

  • Finance & Procurement – Discussion of year-end processes, DfE benchmarking, and updated procurement thresholds.

  • Compliance & GDPR – A refresher on compliance responsibilities and data protection best practice.

  • Arbor System & AI – Practical sessions on managing support staff data, sickness reporting, pay scales, and exploring the potential of AI to streamline reports, summaries, and communications.

  • Estates Management – Updates on planned preventative maintenance, health and safety, and key projects taking place across the trust.

  • Trust Development & Digital Strategy – Outlining the five-year digital transformation plan, sustainability strategy, and exciting plans for Embark events in 2025–26.

Strengthening Collaboration

These SBM meetings continue to be an essential part of how we work together as a trust. They provide a valuable forum for discussion, problem-solving, and sharing best practice between schools. The chance to connect face-to-face strengthened relationships, aligned priorities, and reinforced the sense of “one team” that sits at the heart of Embark’s ethos.

The afternoon also gave time for collaboration and feedback on key trust initiatives, allowing SBMs to contribute their expertise and help shape future planning.

Looking Ahead

The next SBM meeting will take place on Tuesday 14th October 2025, with a full day of finance training planned. We are excited to continue building on the conversations and ideas shared yesterday to ensure our schools are equipped to deliver the very best outcomes for our young people.
