A Landmark Partnership: Embark Federation and the University of Derby Unite to Inspire Futures

Thursday 23rd October 2025 marked a momentous occasion as Embark Federation and the University of Derby formally signed their partnership agreement in the magnificent surroundings of The Devonshire Dome, Buxton. The event celebrated a shared vision to enrich opportunities for young people, staff, and communities across Derbyshire and beyond.
The afternoon began with a beautiful performance by a string quartet, setting an uplifting and elegant tone for the event. Guests were then treated to a selection of delicious food prepared by the University of Derby Buxton’s talented catering team before the programme moved into a series of inspiring speeches and performances.
The event opened with heartfelt addresses from Professor Kathryn Mitchell CBE DL, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Derby; Matt Crawford, Trust Leader of Embark Federation; and Dave King, Chair of Trustees.

Professor Mitchell reflected on the power of shared purpose, noting that “This partnership represents an exciting opportunity to transform the educational landscape in our region. By working closely with Embark Federation, we are building pathways that connect learners from early education through to higher education and employment.”

She spoke of Embark’s strong commitment to its core beliefs; Family, Integrity, Teamwork and Success, and how naturally these align with the University’s mission to nurture growth, learning, and community.
Matt Crawford spoke with pride about his personal connection to the University as a very proud Derby graduate himself, describing the partnership as “a truly special moment that will create countless opportunities for our young people and staff.”
Chair of Trustees Dave King highlighted the transformative potential of collaboration, noting that “connections like this one can genuinely change lives, this is what the partnership dividend looks like in action.”
Following the speeches, the formal signing took place, symbolising the start of an exciting new chapter for both organisations. The moment was witnessed by partners, trustees, staff, and distinguished guests including the High Sheriff of Derbyshire, Sir Richard Fitzherbert, who joined in celebrating the commitment to a shared future.
The afternoon continued with exceptional performances from young people across Buxton schools, including a moving choir and an outstanding brass band that filled the Dome with energy and pride. The event concluded with a show-stopping performance from West End star Lizzie Bea, whose renditions of songs from Hairspray and Sister Act left the audience spellbound.
As the final applause faded, guests gathered for refreshments and conversation, reflecting on the exciting journey ahead. The partnership between Embark Federation and the University of Derby promises a future filled with opportunity, from staff and leadership development to research, training, and enrichment for young people across the Trust.
A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who made the day so special, from the organisers and behind-the-scenes teams to the performers, speakers, and all who attended. Together, we have taken the first step in what will be an extraordinary journey built on shared purpose, vision, and the belief that education transforms lives.
Matt Crawford, Trust Leader of Embark Federation, concluded:
“We are delighted to strengthen our relationship with the University of Derby through this MoU. Together, we aim to create a truly collaborative education system that raises aspirations and delivers lasting change for children, families, and communities across Derbyshire. I couldn’t be prouder of what we are building together.”
